The live edge White Oak surface of the 5 Bench
served its life as a mow pole (supporting hay on the second floor
hay mow) of an early 19th century barn in Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania.
Nearly 9 feet long, and flowing like a stream of gold, the slab
is pure poetry of grain and simple, natural beauty. Hand planed
and sanded smooth and finished with multiple coats of Natural
Tung Oil, the bench seems to float on vertical Red Oak blades
linked by a beech foot. As strong as it is beautiful, the 5 bench
is linked, supported, and punctuated by 5 White Oak butterfly
joints. At home as both a bench and a low table, the piece's proportions
are unusual and uniquely utilitarian. Like most Samuel Moyer Furniture,
the 5 Bench is constructed with no metal, reclaimed materials,
and meticulous traditional techniques.
