In a striking blend of the very old and the very
new, the Hemlock Coffee Table combines history and technology
in a wierdly harmonious and sculptural balance. A client favorite,
this table streches out at odd angles to command and coordinate
space. The top is made of two wide pieces of hemlock salvaged
from the wall of an 18th century carriage house. Unwilling to
lose that history, the artist chose to maintain the shape and
let the wood tell its own story; the rest of the table was constructed
around that shape. The apron is also solid hemlock - barn siding,
this time - planed and polished to bring out honey tones and swirling
grain, and then simply finger-jointed to give depth and continuity
to the tables' corners. The base, composed of laminated plywood
is a cradle for the oldshape and is pleasing in its disconuity.
